It allowed people to share MP3 files to other users and download songs for free. At the time this was revolutionary as this was around the CD/physical copy era. However, Napster caught fire from music labels and infamously Metallica because of how easy it made music pirating. It was then sued for copyright infringement and lost the case causing its shutdown in 2001.
